Early Life, Overcoming Childhood Adversity & Education

Early Life

The Washington Wizards power forward Anthony Gill was born on 17 October 1992 in High Point, North California, United States.

Born to his father, Anthony Gill Sr., and mother, Sandi Summers, he grew up with his brother Dayton and two sisters, Kaytlyn & Nichole.

Overcoming Childhood Adversity

According to Gill, when it comes to overcoming difficulties, there aren’t many who have had to go through as much as him.

He was born with facial paralysis. When his mother was in labor, the doctor used forceps to pull him out of the womb, damaging nerves on one side of his face.

Consequently, it took months for the damage to go away and for the muscles on his face to function properly.

This happened without his proper knowledge, but his parents’ divorce hurt him real bad as he was 12 years old at the time.

To make matters worse, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer the summer before his senior year of high school.

At one point, it seemed like she made it through the disease, but it came back during his freshman year of college.

The witty guy you see on the court has gone through enormous adversity in life and has overcome everything in his power.

Education

Anthony Gill initially played for the South Carolina Gamecocks for a season before being transferred to the University of Virginia.

He did receive interest from North Carolina and Ohio State, but he ultimately chose Virginia.

Gill redshirted his sophomore season, and in his junior season, coming off the bench, he helped the team to win both the ACC regular season and tournament titles.

Career

Despite having an outstanding collegiate career, Gill went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft, so he signed with MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in Germany.

However, he failed the medical exam, so he left the team before the season’s start and then signed with Turkish team Yeşilgiresun Belediye of the Basketbol Süper Ligi.

After a season in Turkey, Anthony signed a contract with the Charlotte Hornets of the NBA to play in the 2017 NBA Summer League, joining Dwayne Bacon, Tyrell Corbin & Treveon Graham.

In 2017, he inked a deal with Russian team Khimki of the VTB United League & played for two seasons before leaving on August 3, 2020.

Gill, who was yet to NBA debut then, saw his wish became a reality when he signed a two-year contract with the Wizards on November 30, 2020.

He scored three points in his NBA debut on December 29, 2020, in a loss against Chicago Bulls.

Anthony’s two-year extension with the Wizards on July 1, 2022, effective throughout the 2023-24 season.

With the Wizards, the NBA power forward made his career-high 18 points in a 100-97 win against the Bulls on January 11, 2023.
